Here are some pix of my strobe installation. I couldn't find a convenient
place to mount it so it was "visible from all directions" as required by
FAR 103 for after sunset flights and still be able to work the switch, and
I didn't want to put it on my helmet as others have done, so I modified the
strobe (which is the inexpensive compact strobe powered by one "D" battery
and avaiable at many marine or outdoor stores).
I made a bracket out of Lexan (polycarbonate) to mount the strobe itself.
Don't use Plexiglass (acrylic) as the vibration could cause it to crack;
polycarbonate won't crack. The curved plate on the back prevents the lines
from hanging up should they be dragged accross the strobe. The whole
arrangement is attached to the cage tubes with cushioned tubing clamps,
bolts and locknuts (you DON'T want something that close to the prop to come
loose!).
The strobe comes with 3 different colored lenses. I cut the white lens
down to go over the strobe bulb and anchor it to the bracket. The wire
enters the battery unit through a hole drilled in the amber lens, and
inside there's a plate with some contacts to make contact with the battery.
The battery box and the wiring are all tiewrapped to the frame.
